Marumo Gallants seek Nedbank Cup semifinal hat-trick

Marumo Gallants face the tough task of an away trip to Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup semifinals, but history is on their side having won both previous visits to the last-4 of the competition.

They also recorded a 2-0 home win over Pirates in the league as recently as this month, but the cauldron of the Orlando Stadium in a semifinal will be a different ball game.
It will be the third time in a row that their semifinal fixture has been away from home, but they have overcome the odds in the past.
Here is a look back at their two previous clashes at this stage of the competition.

2021
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 0-0 MARUMO GALLANTS

TTM (now Marumo Gallants) took Sundowns to penalties after arguably the greatest goalkeeping performance in Nedbank Cup history from Washington Arubi. The Zimbabwean saved everything Sundowns threw at him, with some miraculous stops, and was the sole reason why The Brazilians did not win the game comfortably. He maintained form that in the shootout as TTM were 6-5 winners and went on to beat Chippa United in the decider. TTM scored all their penalties, while Hlompho Kekana missed his for Sundowns.

2022
TTM 0-1 MARUMO GALLANTS
Rather confusingly, TTM, the former owners of Marumo Gallants, started a new club by the same name when they sold their franchise and that side made the semifinals of the 2022 Nedbank Cup. Same name, different team. They faced off in a tense battle at the Thohoyandou Stadium in Venda, and the game was settled by an unfortunate own goal from veteran left-back Luvolwethu Mpeta after 64 minutes. The result means Gallants have yet to concede a goal in almost four hours of Nedbank Cup semifinal action.
